Plans to construct a brand-new Cape Cod Regional Technical High School in Harwich are in the works. Before the project can move forward, voters in each town served by the district must vote to authorize funding for the project.

The vote will be held in Barnstable, Brewster, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Harwich, Mashpee, Orleans, Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet and Yarmouth on Tuesday, October 24, 2017. Polls will be open from 12:00 noon until 8:00 PM.

Cape Cod Regional Technical High School is a vocational-technical high school. Its mission is to provide an opportunity to acquire high quality, academic, technical and social skills which prepare our students for success in our changing world. Fifteen technical programs are offered, providing hands-on experience is provided in a number of vocations including engineering, horticulture, early childhood education, health technology, graphic design, electrical, HVAC, and cosmetology.

The plan to build a new school began in January 2015, when Cape Cod Regional Technical High School moved in to the Massachusetts School Building Authority’s eligibility period.

The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities.

For the past two and a half years, a School Building Committee, made up of members from each town in the District, has been working with administrators on this project.

Seven project alternatives, ranging from renovation of the existing space to demolition and replacement of the school, were presented in October 2016 to the School Building Committee.

The School Building Committee carefully assessed the alternatives using criteria including educational opportunities, compliance with vision, construction cost, impact on students and staff, operating cost, safety, and environmental impacts.

The unanimous decision of the School Building Committee is to construct a brand-new Cape Cod Regional Technical High School,  to the east of the current facility. Preliminary cost estimates came in at $144 million.

The design was fine-tuned following presentation to the MSBA, and in August the MSBA approved the budget, with an adjusted total cost estimate of $128,062,881 – a decrease of $14 million from estimates made during the feasibility study.

The district will be responsible for approximately $86 million. Voters will head to the polls on Tuesday, October 24 to authorize the debt for the project.
