Cape Cod Women Urged To Run For Office

One year after nationwide marches around the country, hundreds of electrified women and their families gathered on the Village Green in Hyannis to both celebrate and discuss the next steps forward in a movement to involve more women in local politics.

Several key speakers motivated the crowd, including State Representative Sarah Peake, Rev. Dr. Kristin Harper, environmentalist Dr. Madhavi Venkatesan, march organizer Stephanie Houghton,  Ronda Tobey of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, and Cape and Islands State Senator Julian Cyr, urging attendees to get involved in 2018.

Cyr invited women to take a “seat at the table”, asking them to run for state, local, and community offices, saying “We need women like you, now, more than ever.”

Building on the momentum of Saturday’s march, a free grassroots candidate training session is being offered this Saturday at the Cape Cod Community Media Center on Shad Hole Road in Dennisport from 10 am to 5 pm.
