The Cape Media News GUIDE
to Annual Town Meeting

One of the purest forms of democracy is Town Meeting, an annual event that provides an opportunity for you, the citizen taxpayer, to voice your opinion and direct the course of government in your town. Town Meeting has been practiced in New England since Colonial times.  Here on Cape Cod, Annual Town Meeting season is about to begin.

During Town Meeting, most or all of the members of a community come together to legislate policy and budgets for local government. This is a town-level meeting where decisions are made, and YOU have a chance to be a part of the decision making.

Think about developments, road work improvements, school funding, community preservation projects, conservation, municipal funding, town bylaws, ordinances, rules and regulations – most or all of these decisions are made at Town Meeting, where you have the opportunity to vote in favor or against spending intiatives.

Each spring, selectmen will decide on a warrant, which is the listing of items (known as articles) that will be voted on by the public.

Registered voters are invited to gather on a specific date and time, and the warrant items are presented by town officials, opened for discussion, and voted on by the residents in the audience.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts provides an in-depth guide to Town Meeting, click here to read the guide.

Boards of selectmen are in the process of approving warrants for upcoming Town Meetings. We will post them here when they are available. For now, mark your calendars for Annual Town Meeting in YOUR town. And if you aren’t yet registered to vote – visit your Town Clerk’s office today. The last day to register to be eligible to participate in the Annual Town Meeting and Annual Town Election is 20 days prior to the meeting.
