Navigating your town’s governmental structure can seem intimidating at first, but thanks to a popular educational series, Barnstable residents have the chance to learn more, straight from the folks doing the job.

Inside Barnstable Town Government: A Citizen’s Leadership Academy was launched in 2003 as a way to better inform citizens about the inner workings of Town government and to encourage citizen participation in governmental affairs. More than 700 Barnstable residents have taken the class, and many have gone on to serve the Town as elected and appointed officials, and some becoming staff members!

This February, the twenty-fifth session of Inside Barnstable Town Government will begin. The 11 week course is held Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9:00 PM in various locations throughout the town.  Town staff conduct classes and provide interactive learning experiences, group discussions, and site tours.

The program is free of charge and open to anyone who lives or works in the Town of Barnstable.  Class size is limited. To apply, you may pick up an application at the Town Manager’s office, located on the 2nd floor of Barnstable Town Hall, 367 Main Street, Hyannis. To receive an application by mail or fax, call 508-862-4610. You may also apply online – click here for the link.
