Last week in Wareham, the United States Coast Guard conducted its two-day Buzzards Bay Ports and Waterways Safety Assessment Workshop. Participants convened at the Towneplace Suites Marriott for a structured workshop with facilitated sessions aimed to ensure the environmental protection and safe navigation of the Buzzards Bay waterway system.

This is all be in preparation for a final report that will released to the general public in the near future, highlighting the risks on the bay as well as potential risk mitigation measures. The report will outline results from participant discussion, comments made during the workshop, and specific ideas on what strategies should be deployed. Most of these suggestions came from those invited for the workshop, which were a general representation of public groups, commercial interests and non-profit organizations, with the main requirement being their waterway expertise. In the words of Coast Guard Capt. Richard Schultz, “I really appreciate all the participants’ candid dialogue and time given to gather information to promote safe navigation and environmental protection of Buzzards Bay.”
