Ladies and Gentlemen, The Pops by the Sea Guest Conductor!

Pops by the Sea is coming this August, and they’ve now found their guest conductor. This time around, it’s Dermot Mulroney, the veteran character actor with over 100 film and TV roles to his name. And those who are wondering, he appeared in several 90s romcoms and has a recurring role on New Girl. Have no fear, Mulroney does have connections to the Cape in general and Orleans in particular. Not to mention he does have classical music experience (he has played the cello on-and-off since fourth grade), so his conducting will be real and not look like Jackson Pollock has a large spider on the end of the brush.

So far, the people organizing the whole affair seem to be excited by the choice. “It’s wonderful to have someone as talented and successful as Dermot give back to a place that he has enjoyed for so long,” commented Julie Wake, executive director of the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod, for whom this event is their largest fundraiser. “The guest conductor always adds an element of excitement and energy to the concert,” said Jerry Sargent, president of Citizens Bank Massachusetts that funds the annual concert. “Once again, the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod hit a home run with Dermot Mulroney participating in this year’s concert. His talent as an actor and musician is a thrilling addition to the Boston Pops and Maestro Keith Lockhart.”

Plus for Mulroney, this is not his first time performing on the Cape. In fact, back in 2013, he and his actress mother Ellen did a staged reading of “Peter Pan’s Mother” at the Cape Rep Theatre in Brewster. Given that, his musical work and what he’s done in Hollywood, this ought to be a good show – or at least a very good distraction from the suffocating humidity.
