Dave Teffer

For the past 17 years Dave and his family have made their home in Eastham on Cape Cod.
A native of Wisconsin, Dave began working in his father’s concrete and masonry business at the age of fourteen. Dave learned the skills necessary for quality concrete and masonry work from his father and co-workers. After 45 years in the trade, Dave now combines his practical experience with his natural artistic talent to create beautiful and functional pieces of concrete art. Polished concrete coffee tables and unique Hypertufa planters, along with many one-of-a-kind custom creations delight his clients.

Dave is available to assist you with design, materials, delivery and set-up for the pieces he creates.

The ancient Romans used material remarkably close to modern cement to build their architectural marvels such as the Colosseum and the Pantheon. In 1824 Joseph Aspdin of England had a hand in the invention of modern Portland cement, He named his cement Portland, after a rock quarry that produced very strong stone.

Contrary to popular belief, concrete and cement are not the same thing. Cement is actually a component of concrete. Concrete is made up of : water, sand, gravel and Portland cement. Nylon fibers and steel can be added for extra strength. Cement in powder form acts as a binding agent when mixed with water, sand and aggregates.

In very early English history, artisans hand-carved feed and water troughs from Tufa Rock (a volcanic rock) for livestock. These were later replaced with metal troughs, and the stone troughs were gathered up and used as planters in English Gardens. As they became scarce and expensive, Hypertufa was created in the late 1800’s to make planters. Hypertufa is a mixture of vermiculite or perlite, and peat moss along with Portland Cement and water. Nylon fibers are added for extra strength. Colors can also be added.
