HYANNIS, MA (August 17, 2017) – In the wake of a violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville Virginia and the recent anti-semitic vandalism that has occurred in two Cape Cod communities, the local faith community is preparing to gather together in peace and solidarity, with the goal of bringing unity to our community.

The nation continues to be shocked following the violent weekend in Charlottesville Virginia, a clash between white nationalists and counter-protesters that left one dead, others injured, and put a spotlight on the continued confusion, divisiveness and ongoing racial unrest in our country.

We are not immune from hate here on Cape Cod. This week alone a Holbrook man was arrested in Sandwich after he was caught on-camera vandalizing a local golf course with images of swastikas. Mashpee police are currently investigating an incident in which a swastika was found painted on the hood of a car parked in the New Seabury section of town.

The Cape Cod faith community is inviting all of Cape Cod to come together and to stand in witness to the values of compassion and justice.  A peace rally will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the Cape Cod Synagogue in Hyannis. This is intended as a time to be together with all who wish to counter messages of hatred by kindling the light of hope and human dignity for all.

“While this event will offer a chance for people to voice their opposition to any hateful speech or actions, we are committed to affirming that love, light, and hope WILL WIN!”, says organizer Rev. Libby Gibson of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Barnstable Village.
Gibson adds that the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. are helping to guide planning of the event:
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.
