Solving The Affordable Housing Crisis

Cape Housing Institute to provide leaders with important tools to help solve the region’s affordable housing crisis

Housing Assistance Corporation (HAC) and Community Development Partnership (CDP) are partnering on an initiative to help Cape Cod towns solve the affordable housing crisis by giving municipal officials, residents, business leaders and community leaders the tools to solve the economic crisis caused by a lack of affordable housing.

Housing and the Cape’s economy are tightly bonded–without a good balance, both suffer. And just like our estuaries and watersheds, the affordable housing crisis knows no town boundaries. Affordable housing is a problem that can only be solved with collaboration and participation from all of our Cape Cod towns and leaders.

While many local organizations are working on ways to improve the housing stock on Cape Cod and provide housing that’s affordable for working Cape Codders, the process itself can be quite complicated.

That’s why the Housing Assistance Corporation and the Community Development Partnership have teamed up to offer education for municipal staff and local elected and appointed officials, in an attempt to provide the tools needed to make smart decisions about affordable housing.

The Cape Housing Institute is a free six-week session that will offer tips for completing a housing production plan, financing 101, information on fair housing regulations, and more. The institute will give local municipal leaders the tools they need to help solve the crisis caused by the lack of housing that’s affordable on Cape Cod.

Town managers, department heads, selectmen, councilors, members of boards like the Zoning Board of Appeals, Community Preservation Committee, Housing Authority, housing trusts, and more are all encouraged to attend. The free six-week session is being offered in multiple locations in the upper, mid, lower and outer Cape.

Affordable housing is a regional issue, and the Cape Community Housing Partnership is hoping to foster relationships and begin important conversations between the people responsible for making smart affordable housing decisions for the future of Cape Cod.
