Since January, there have been 11 incidents of gun violence on school property in the United States, more than half of which resulted in loss of life. In response, Cape Cod residents are invited to attend an Active Shooter/ Hostile Events (ASHE) training session next month that will give them the tools they need to be prepared.

Yarmouth Police Lieutenant Kevin Lennon, in partnership with the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce, will lead the nationally recognized training program and teach local business owners and community members how to protect themselves in the event of an ASHE.

“Kids in school learn how to protect themselves, but a lot of adults don’t know what to do,” says Yarmouth Police Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos. “[The training is] for all ages, residents and non-residents.”

The training will give the attendees an overview on what an Active Killer Event is and what they can do to protect themselves after 9-1-1 is called.  It will also include an in-depth look at the Virginia Tech School shooting, as well as a review of FBI Active Shooter/Hostile Event data from 2000 to 2013.

“There are killers out there,” says Deputy Chief Xiarhos. “In today’s world, everyone should know what to do.”

The event is being held at the Yarmouth Police Department on 340 Higgins Crowell Rd in West Yarmouth on Saturday February 17th from 9 am to 11 am.

Registration is not required.
